BBQ-Toro Potjie, South African cast iron cooking pot for open fire

The potjie is a heavy, traditional, cast-iron pot with a precisely fitting lid, suitable for cooking, frying, braising, deep-frying, steaming, and baking anywhere. Whether over a fire pit, barbecue area, or campfire, it is portable and versatile.

In the potjie you can effortlessly conjure up delicious dishes such as tender pot roast, hearty stews, fragrant bread, juicy cakes and much more.

Thanks to its high mass of cast iron, the potjie ensures excellent heat distribution and evens out uneven heat sources, so your food cooks evenly. Simply place glowing coals, embers, or briquettes on both the lid and under the pot, and you're ready to enjoy your potjie experience.

BBQ-Toro's potjies are pre-seasoned and ready to use. Detailed instructions are included should re-seasoning be necessary after use.

Information on burning in
BBQ-Toro's potjies are pre-seasoned and ready to use. If re-seasoning is necessary, clean the pot with hot water. Then rub it with neutral-tasting vegetable oil (e.g., coconut oil). Place the potjie upside down in the oven at 200°C (or better yet, in a hot charcoal grill) for one hour. Rub in any remaining oil. That's it! Repeat this process regularly to fill the pores and optimally protect the pot from rust.

Information on cleaning/maintenance
Hot water is sufficient for cleaning – scrub off larger food residues with a brush. Never use soap or harsh cleaning agents. These will destroy the seasoning layer, and the pot will then need to be re-seasoned (see above). Do not store food scraps in the potjie. Remove ash from the lid and pot immediately after use, as it can otherwise promote rust when combined with moisture.

Information on storage
Grease with good cooking oil, place a sheet of kitchen paper inside, and leave the lid slightly ajar. This way, the potjie will easily withstand longer storage periods.
